The Causes and Effects of Alcoholism
Term Paper 12/7/11 Biology 205 The Causes and Effects of potomania In the United States in that respect ar approximately 79,000 deaths annually attributed to excessive inebriantic b eerage use (NASAIC, 2011). drinking is defined as a medical ailment or a neurological infirmity. crapulence is essentially when a person continues to drink, even when health, work, or family argon being harmed (NCBI et al, 2011). inebriant is non an issue when enjoyed in moderation and responsibly, this however is non always the case. 18. 3 million people in the U. S. atomic number 18 heavy drinkers among these ar 12. million people who have a bun in the oven one or much symptoms of boozing (NCBI et al, 2011). Some of the many symptoms of intoxicantism are hostility when asked about swallow, inability to stop or reduce intoxicant intake, or making excuses to drink. The number of paradox drinking in the U. S. has outgrowthd 8. 2 part since 1980 and with the growing necessitateance o f intoxicant this number is at risk of rising in the near early (NCBI et al, 2011). Problem drinking ignore be defined in two categories, alcohol dependence and alcohol misuse. Alcohol abuse is when a person block drinks as way to overleap from individual(prenominal) capers.Alcohol dependence is when a person has an addiction to alcohol and kindlenot control how very much they drink. The person simply cannot just have one drink of alcohol without feeling the need to become intoxicated. The juicyest prevalence of alcohol dependence and abuse is among dayss 18-24. Over 80 percent of college presidents in the U. S. bring up alcohol abuse as the biggest problem on campus (nd. edu et al, 2003). College scholarly persons are in the ideal environment to mystify a drinking disorder. Students are away from their families and are caring for themselves for often the first time in their lives.Muscular System Muscle MetabolismWith the increase in responsibility in their lives stud ents can recollect themselves stressed and confused. These factors exactly lead to students drinking amongst other students in efforts to fit in or as an escape from their stu hand outs or other affectionate problems. However, drinking too much and regularly only leads to even more social and physical problems in the future and possibly for the rest of their lives. Alcoholism is something that should not just be seen as a socially de bulkyating disease. The life of a person with alcoholism is controlled by their alcohol addiction. The many short term effects of alcohol are minor compared to the long term health concerns from excessively abusing alcohol. Public health organizations are utilizing new methods of taproom and research to combat the further rise in this disease. Demographics Though there are risk factors for create alcoholism there is no definite cause of the disease. A history of alcoholism in a persons family definitely increases their risks of developing the disord er. This theory has been validated throughout the years utilizing twins in adoption cases growing up in various families.Current research concludes that certain genes may increase the risk of alcoholism, but the identity and function of which genes are still unknown (NCBI et al, 2011). Ethnic and religious background can also play a reference in the development of alcoholism, in relation to the cultures life styles and acceptance of alcohol. Cultural, religious values and expectations towards alcohol vary and can all promote or disapprove drinking. Members of different ethnic and cultural groups generally show preferences for different types of waterspout beverages, which can affect their access and alcohol exposure.Other factors much(prenominal)(prenominal) as a races reaction to alcohol can affect the prevalence of drinking. For example, blacks are 3 times more likely to develop an alcohol related disease than white (NIAA et al, 2005). The SAMHSA National Household Survey on Drug Abuse reported that 3. 5% of people in their finished sample could be classified as alcohol dependent. Caucasian and black surveyors had a similar rate of 3. 4 percent of alcohol dependence (NIAA et al, 2005). Alcoholism pass judgment for Native American and Hispanic-Mexican Americans are higher compared to other ethnicities at 5. percent (NIAA et al, 2005). It was found that these groups tend to start drinking at an earlier age and drank more heavily compared to other ethnic groups in the United States. The rates of alcohol dependence were lower among other groups, Caribbean, 1. 9%, Central American, 2. 8%, Cuban, 0. 9%, Puerto Rican, 3. 0% and South American, 2. 1% and Asian/Pacific Islander, 1. 8% (NIAA et al, 2005). The survey also reported that Asian Americans had higher rates of abstention and lower rates of heavy alcohol consumption compared to Whites, African Americans, and Hispanics.Diversity in drinking patterns is very distinguished between subgroups of the same r acial or ethnic group. Mexican Americans born(p) in the U. S. report drinking more often, but consuming less alcohol, and have three times higher rates of alcohol dependence (NIAA et al, 2005). This emphasizes that the lifestyle and genetics of a person play a great role in alcoholism then race or culture. This is also relevant when expression at gender discrepancies. Women and men have the same chances of becoming alcoholics. However, women have a much stronger reaction to the effects of alcohol therefore there are many more cases of alcoholism in men though there is no research to condense gender susceptibility (NIAA et al, 2005). Womens stronger reaction to alcohol also means that women are more susceptible to alcohol related illnesses after fewer years of heavy drinking. While research has provided many factors that increase the risk of alcoholism the highest risk factor for developing a drinking problem is a persons lifestyle. This is why college students with their young, e ager, and immature demographic are ideal for the development of alcoholism.Effects of Alcoholism on the read/write head Alcohol is a central nervous system depressant and unlike other drugs alcohol does not activate a specific receptor in the reason. This attributes to the wide range of side effects of intoxication. Some of the side effects from drinking heavily include slurred speech, loss of inhibitions, slowed reaction times, loss of balance and memory loss. Cleary alcohol affects the brain vetoly when causing these reactions. A definite sign that someone had consumed uttermost too much alcohol is a black out. This is when a person has no recollection of events while they were intoxicated.A survey of 772 college undergraduates found that 51 percent of the students reported to having a blackout multiple times in their lives (nd. edu et al, 2003). What they do not recall is the altered state that their brains were in at the time. An estimated one-third to half of all unintent ional and intentional injured Americans in accidents, crimes, and suicides were intoxicated (BSCS et al, 2003). Alcohols affect on the outer layer of the frontal lens cortex percentage of the brain interferes with the conscious thought process (BSCS et al, 2003).This contributes to the loss of inhibitions and sometimes careless behavior when someone is intoxicated. However, research has shown that these short term effects of alcohol abuse can be immensely more severe than just a hangover. People who drink heavily and regularly greatly increase their risk of developing changes in the brain. Up to 80 percent of alcoholics have thiamine deficiency (BSCS et al, 2003). This is a common occurrence in alcoholics and directs from poor overall nutrition. This can in the end develop into serious brain disorders such as Wernicke or Korsakoff syndrome.Korsakoffs psychosis is a chronic and debilitating syndrome, resulting in persistent learning and memory problems (BSCS et al, 2003). in tha t location are also cases where people have had difficulty walking and with hand eye coordination. People with Wernickes encephalopathy have mental confusion, paralysis of the nerves that move the eyes and difficulty with muscle coordination (BSCS et al, 2003). Drinking during pregnancy can lead to a range of physical, learning, and behavioral effects in the developing brain of the fetus (BSCS et al, 2003). This is known as fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS).FAS infants brains may have less volume and fewer brain cells as wellhead as being smaller than average. Therefore, drinking during pregnancy ensures the child a high risk of developing serious health problems early on in their lives. Effects of Alcoholism on the Body The dangers of alcohol are commonly associated with the altered states of mind people can find themselves in while the negative physical reactions to alcohol can be much more severe. Alcohol offers very little nutritional value and is high calories. The body treats alc ohol as fat, converting alcohol sugars into fatty acids (BSCS et al, 2003).This results in a lack of energy and endurance. When alcohol is consumed 20% is absorbed by the stomach and 80% by the small intestine. When alcohol enters the blood stream it can affect nearly every tissue in the body. This is because cell membranes are highly permeable to alcohol (BSCS et al, 2003). This absorption can be affected by the amount of food or liquid in a persons stomach. Other factors such as how right away the alcohol is consumed or how much a person weighs also affect absorption which leads to intoxication. Women absorb alcohol faster due to their metabolism. The absorption of alcohol is referred to as the BAC, blood alcohol content. (Graph pg. 10) When our society thinks of alcohol related deaths alcohol poisoning is first to come to mind. Not only can a person die from drinking too much alcohol at one sitting but research has shown that consuming alcohol can result in vast amount of differe nt alcohol related disease. One study determined that 3. 6% of all cancer cases worldwide are related to alcohol drinking, resulting in 3. 5% of all cancer death (NASAIC, 2011). Research has also concluded that drinking alcohol heavily can damage brain tissue, heart, liver and fruitful organs.Problem drinking can also cause pancreatitis, nutritional deficiencies, malignancies, and cirrhosis (NASAIC, 2011). The liver is the most vulnerable organ to alcohol abuse because it breaks down the alcohol into clean by products and years of this can destroy the liver. Therefore, the negative effects on the body substantially outweigh the possible positive social aspects from drinking. Factors causing the problem In our society drinking alcohol has become widely accepted and is associated with a celebratory or ceremonial atmosphere. This is a key component in the current increase in alcoholism. With the current acceptance, stigmas and speculations about alcohol in our country people are unawa re of the severity of the drug. The increase in alcoholism is due to the fact that a majority of people in our nation drinks alcohol rather than profane. The public receives their in wee-weeation about alcohol through family, peers, media, and personal experimentation. The information people and especially college students or children living in homes with alcoholism are receiving often glamorizes alcohol. Therefore, the public knows very little about effects of alcohol and the consequential harm they can inflict on themselves and others. Other factors such as the quantity and frequency a person tends to drink plays a role in the chances of developing a drinking disorder. People with addictive personalities, depression and other social disorders are also at a very high risk of becoming alcoholics (NASAIC, 2011). These people with stressful lifestyles, depression or anxiety problems often use alcohol as a release. Drinking numbs their pain and is an escape from their social issues.A st riking 20% of all suicide victims in the United States had a form of alcoholism prior to their suicide attempt (NCBI et al, 2011). Adolescents that live in a culture where alcohol use is common are often pressured by their peers to partake. All of these risk factors are directly correlated to scenarios most college students find themselves in. In result, this age group is at the greatest risk of developing a drinking disorder. College students are at an impressionable age and are aspect to meet and befriend new people. They are peer pressured into going out with their riends to restaurants, bars and clubs. With easy access to alcohol they are often drinking more frequently than any other time in their lives. Research has shown that immaturity of neurotransmitter system and hormonal changes during puberty lead to more pleasure in drinking alcohol (NASAIC, 2011). This means that developing brains introduced to alcohol may trigger long term biological changes developing into an alcoho l addiction. The overall public neglect and unknowing of the severity of alcoholism only leads to increasing rates of alcoholism in our society.Providing the public with a better understanding of the ease in developing this disorder is an immediate necessity in our nation. Public Health Response In most cases a person suffering due to alcoholism does not accept that they have a problem. This makes it very difficult or sometimes impossible to cure. The support from loved ones and friends is essential to foster find the person a form of treatment that suits them. Alcoholism is treated with counseling and support groups like any social disorder. There is very large number of national and local help services for people looking for help dealing with their addictions.Impatient treatment centers are closed communities where patients are able to live focused on controlling their addiction. Alcoholism is common to most drug addictions, whereas after being dependent on the drug continence triggers withdrawal symptoms and often results in relapses. In these cases having the close support of an impatient rehab center is the most effective. Tragically most alcoholics do not have the chance of obtaining impatient sobriety because of lack of money. Outpatient programs are less expensive and are an effective method of treating an addiction.SMART, LifeRing, andAlcoholics Anonymous are all support groups that attempt to resolve the behavioral effects that led the person to become an alcoholic (NCBI et al, 2011). Participants meet in groups or class a number of times a week and share their own personal alcoholism experiences. As a whole group working towards a sober lifestyle the patients have the counselor or the other participant to turn to when they need help dealing with a possible relapse. In most cases a person will never completely resolve their alcohol addiction.Refraining from drinking entirely after achieving sobriety is recommended to limit the chances of relapsi ng. Alcoholics struggling with staying sober can be prescribed medications. Acamprosate and Naltrexone are some drugs that have been shown to lower relapse rates in those who are alcohol dependent by reducing cravings and withdrawal symptoms (NASAIC, 2011). Prevention methods are currently being utilized to give people a better understanding of the risks and affects of alcohol. Programs such as D. A. R. E and other anti drug and alcohol programs are used to build awareness.Colleges have recognized the vulnerability of college students and have increased student awareness substantially over the past years. Online alcohol education programs are now mandatory for college freshmen to complete prior to admission to most universities. Though these classes are sometimes tedious and time consuming there is no doubt that they give adolescents a better awareness of alcoholisms social and physical effects. Other forms of prevention include warnings on alcoholic packaging and labels. These info rm drinkers the percentage of alcohol in the drink and pregnancy warnings are always evident (NASAIC, 2011).Health organizations are working together to help find out more on the treatment and prevention of alcoholism to combat the prevalence of the disease in the future. Conclusion Alcoholism is not a disorder that only affects the one suffering from the disease. An addiction to alcohol controls the life of the patient, as well as their families. 56 million of Americans assure that alcohol abuse has brought trouble to his or her family (NCBI et al, 2011). Getting a person to recognize the harm they are causing to themselves and others from their drinking is the first step of resolution the problem. The immense amount of organizations and support groups in America today provides people the best possible treatment. Studies continue to discover new illnesses that are in result of alcohol abuse. There is still no definite cause of the disease yet the factors attributing to developing alcoholism are definite. With a better understanding of the disease and a raised public awareness alcoholism is something that can be preventable for future generation. The chances of developing an alcohol addiction are higher than ever which only leads to a new age of alcohol related diseases if the neglect of the negative effects of alcohol continues.Blood Alcohol Concentration Changes in Feelings and Personality Brain Regions Affected Impaired Activities (continuum) 0. 010. 05 Relaxation Sense of well being Loss of inhibition Cerebral cortex Alertness ,Judgment, CoordinationVisual tracking, Reasoning and depth perceptionInappropriate, obnoxious social behavior Slurred speech, Lack of balanceLoss of temperature regulation, Loss of bladder controlDifficulty breathing, Slowed heart rate 0. 060. 10 Pleasure Numbness of feelings Nausea, Sleepiness Emotional arousal Cerebral cortex + forebrain 0. 110. 0 Mood swings, Anger Sadness, Mania Cerebral cortex + forebrain + cerebellum 0. 210 . 30 Aggression Reduced sensations Depression stupefaction Cerebral cortex + forebrain + cerebellum + brain stem 0. 310. 40 Unconsciousness Death possible Coma Entire brain 0. 41 and greater Death Advisory committee and NIAAA scientists (bscs. org, 2003) (Effects of Alcoholism on the Brain continued) Effects of Blood Alcohol Concentration The graph depicts the average persons stirred up and physical altering when consuming a certain amount of alcohol. Garnier Fructis – Innovation
LOreal Garnier Fructis oil color+Shampoo Introduction LOreal, the French cosmetic giant has become one of the leading players in the salon w ars sector in India. It marks its presence with a portfolio of 15 brands that grew over the span of nigh two decades in the Indian merchandise place, having an annual growth rate of 30 percent with a marketplace share of 10 percent in the urban area. These different brands were launched in order to cover different product categories. The mass consumer brands LOreal Paris, Garnier and Maybel occupancy New York luxury brands Yves Saint Laurent, Kiehls, Ralph Lauren, Giorgio Armani, Diesel and Lancome professional brands LOreal Professionnel, Matrix, Kerastase and Keraskin esthetics and pharmacy brands Vichy and La Roche-Posay. (premiumbeauty cuttings. com, 2012). With almost 750,000 points of sale in both the traditional network as swell as in the modern supermarket network, the brand Garnier has successfully become the leading multi-cate gory beauty brand in India.Launched in 1991, this global brand understood the dynamics of the Indian market and was able to craft a special place for itself. Even though Garnier is positioned as a premium, nature-based and innovative brand, it is priced reasonably targeting at both, the hurrying and middle socio-economic classes. Worldwide, LOreal is famous for its product foot and this trait is healthyly portrayed in Garnier done its continuous new product launches. This also creates excitement amongst the consumers to try out the new innovative personal care products, leading to brand loyalty.Garnier has two sub-brands Garnier Fructis and Garnier Ultra Doux. Garnier Fructis almost immediately created a very strong bond with the consumers since it was positioned as a fruit based brand. The Indian consumer is happier using natural based products compared to the chemic based ones. Under this brand, a revolutionary product was launched in the year 2010 Garnier Fructis Oil+Shampo o that took the pilus care market by storm. In this report, LOreals innovation and new product learning models are explained in respect to their Garnier Fructis Oil+Shampoo product.Innovation Model According to LOreal Indias mind operating officer, Mr. Dinesh Dayal, for this kind of success, the most essential factor is to yield the right kind of innovation, which was achieved through with(predicate) a blend of aggressive market research, intuition and the power of their global R&D. Along with the three briny drivers of innovation for LOreal, i. e. active ingredients, grooming and evaluation research has always been the main crux for the troupes growth. When it comes to creating cosmetic products, science is the main driver of innovation. An advanced research for discovering new active ingredients is conducted, where scientific knowledge about skin and cop around the world is gathered, after which formulation systems are true and adapted by various brands including Garnier aro und the world. For the Fructis Oil+Shampoo launch in the Indian market, the product is formulated using three oils as its key active ingredients, i. e. Olive oil for deep diet of the roots, Avocado oil for nourishment of the hair fiber and making it supple and Shea oil for softening the surface.Once the formulation has been complete, the transition from the molecule to finished product is done after demonstrating the products safety and whether it is scientific tout ensembley effective. nevertheless quite an than managementing entirely on scientific research, LOreal believes in research that listens to consumers. They aim to nurture innovation through a ceaseless dialog between science and marketing. Thus, in order to discover and give out beauty habits of international consumers, the International Department of Studies and Consumer Insights was created.Garnier realized that in India, in order to nourish their hair, women extensively believed in the beauty ritual of oiling the ir hair, followed by a scalp massage and shampoo. The current fast-paced times seemed to be moving away from this ritual as it is time-consuming. This became a source of inspiration for the 2-in-1 formula of hair oil and shampoo by Garnier. This is what Indias head of operations c solelys as Indo-vation Innovation specifically for the Indian market. In order to understand the global consumers of LOreal, they strengthened their global presence in half dozen regions Europe, United States, Japan, China, Brazil and India. This enabled LOreal to come closer to their global market, as well as to contact the wealth of specific scientific and marketing knowledge of each region. In India, LOreal has its product instruction center in Mumbai from where it studies the specifics of hair and skin types of the Indian consumers, as well as their expectations and beauty routines for all its brands including Garnier, and an advanced research center in Bangalore where it screens its active ingredi ents to address scalp concerns, hair breakage and pigmentation disorders.According to jean Paul Agon (Chairman, LOreal Paris), opening a research and innovation center in Mumbai was in line with the companys universalization outline in order to adapt to the cultural specific needs for all its global brands. Further, LOreal abides by the principles of sustainable and responsible innovation on a daily basis. ingathering safety is an absolute priority for this cosmetic giant, and has contributed massively to the study of toxicology due to its constant scientific commitment. The aggroup at the Ultramodern Global Center is responsible for the beneficial and undesirable effects of all the ingredients.Unlike Pantene, headway & Shoulders and Herbal Essence shampoos available in the Indian market, Garnier Fructis Oil+Shampoo does not use subtle chemicals such as Methylchloroisothiazolinone, a preservative causing harmful effects on the skin as well as the immune system and Ammonium Chlo ride which is harmful when swallowed and causes serious eye irritation. Instead, this product uses typeset extracts such as Pyrus Malus and Peel extracts. Also, LOreal makes sure that its products have minimum concern on the environment throughout their entire life cycle. For this purpose, all the raw materials are under constant monitoring for environmental indicators. LOreal stopped animal examination in 1989 and plans to terminate human biopsy for testing clinical effectiveness in the near future. New Product Development Model LOreal operates in a very turbulent and volatile fashion industry, making the product life cycles very short. But according to Crawford (1988), an early entry of new product may result in the development of a new market and long term market dominance. Garnier Fructis Oil+Shampoo is one such product.Based on Ansoffs (1965, 1968) directional policy matrix, LOreal implemented the product development strategy, catering to the Indian market with a new product, i. e. 2 in 1 oil and shampoo. New product development enables LOreal to earn increased value for the company through a superior market share. The company believes in creating innovative products which are not only differentiated but also satisfy different segments in the international market. Before launching a new product, the company has to ensure that the product is based on the consumers preferences and is ifferentiated from any other product in terms of its formula/innovation. Once such an conceit is generated by market research, R&D takes over. Once completing the R&D extremity, the market veracity is observed and different ways of marketing the product are employed. A companys throw would be shattered if there if any negligence in this context, resulting to product liveures upon launch. Therefore the complex process of new product development has a direct impact on LOreals prestige. LOreal invests heavily while launching any new product and be certain about its effective ness, practicality and marketability of these products. Thus, onward commercialization of Garnier Fructis Oil+Shampoo in the Indian market, an intensive market research was done in order to identify the beauty ritual of oiling the hair prior to shampooing and how through R&D, this finding was converted into an effective molecular formula, later supported by a screening test and eventually passageway through the market testing stage. Conclusion According to Wang and Von Tunzelmann (1997), rather than R&D, marketing perceives a more(prenominal) critical role in the positioning of a new product in any market segment. In context of the Garnier Fructis Oil+Shampoo launch, it is a product that was never thought of earlier by the Indian consumers, thus making it difficult to believe in. Fundamentally, shampoo is used against oil and these are two products are not supposed to work together. Since the time factor prevents the consumers from using both oil and shampoo at the same time, Garni er has tried integrating the north-pole and the south-pole. They are trying to combine two attributes having a negative family and trying to convince the consumers that there is a scope of redefining this relationship and making them work positively together.Once this strategy can get established, it may work as a powerful differentiator. Garnier now needs to focus on developing a story that is credible enough for the consumers to believe in. Regardless of whether the innovations by Garnier would fail or succeed in the market, they have managed to gain equity through its innovative products, heavy enthronization in brand promotion, strong distribution reach and premium positioning along with a snotty-nosed pricing strategy, creating a special place in the Indian personal care industry. Living in a dynamic earth Essay
Evolving from ape-man society to the advanced civilization nowadays, people start to inhabit in artificial concrete jungle and live far away from the given natural surroundings. With social progression and economic benefits, peoples crave for natural re showtimes keeps escalating from time to time. People have a great t leftoverency to contract resources yet ignore the long-termbehavioral consequences that ar destined to cycle back eventually. The significance of sustainability is more often than not overlooked. The book homo Science and Human Hi fabrication 101 considers the planet and gentle as a whole system and tells the story in an in fundamental integrityal scientific way.The book contains four main topics. Firstly inform the formation write up of the creation and facts intimately different parts and components of the country to provide readers a hard concept and basis of the planet. aft(prenominal)wards, it gradually explores the fact that kind generation deve lopment and growing be greatly determined by the changes on the rea watchword, for instance, the uncontrollable natural catastrophe-volcano eruption. Hence it evaluates the resulting impacts and relationships between humanity beings development and the humanity as a circulating ecosystem. The first chapter starts with the exploration of the explanation and facts of atmosphere, oceans and rivers. An inlet of the atmosphere composition and certain(a) scenarios of greenhouse effect and ozone depletion spark off the chapter. The sun gives life to the reality. It provides a primary naught source to the Earth. Solar zilch of the sun breeds and sustains the living(a) things. Temperature on the Earth simply controls climates and determines changes on the living environment and consequently triggers alterations in human behaviors, which creates human history through centuries. This chapter specifically links the variation of solar ray of light to the changes on surface of the Ear th and history of mankind. The aforementioned changes in solar radiation are explained by long-term cycles. (Chapter 1, P.5) With obtaining the trapped gas of carbon dioxide in ice to determine the information about the changes in atmospheric temperature, in which a 100,000 eld of slow cooling in glacial periods and 20,000 old age of rapid warming in interglacial periods can be investigated.Climate changes create different periods and with the start and end of different periods generate distant consequences hence affect and shift living of human. From the long history of 1,5000 years ago, increasing temperature leaded to the melting of water and terminated the last sparkler Age. With the end of last Ice Age, three main consequences topographic effects of deglaciation, peopling effect of the Americas and the possibility of the occurrence of biblical flood in the Black Sea occur. (Chapter 1, P.15) These three effects further mold thesurface of the Earth with the junctions of river s, separation of the Earth continents and expansion of sea area. Firstly, topographic effects of deglaciation discusses the animal(prenominal) evidence of glaciation on overthrow and rapid sea level upgrade. The melting of ice uncover the land and exposed much of the topography of North America and Union Europe. Secondly, peopling of the Americas confers the idea of very different evolution patterns between South and North Americas using congressmans of primates, hominins and Homo sapiens. The place setting was leaded by the isolation of North America by the opening of the Atlantic and Arctic Oceans.Thirdly, deluge of the Black Sea tells that the Black sea was once isolated, and by connecting the Black Sea with other earthly concerns ocean by melting ice, the busiest waterway in the world that affects peoples raptus routes and preferences is created. Then from the shorter history of past 2000 years, the time is divided into five periods with obvious evidence of the influen ce of climates to human behavior and history. (Chapter 1, P.17) For example, in the Little Ice Age, a decrease in food production and rise in food prices due to a cold climate spurred the emigration of people and eventually the mellowed food process leaded the French Revolution. It is evident that although it seems irrelevant, when viewing the human history and climates together, we can respect huge and direct relationship that can by no means be overlooked.Climate changes human behaviors and builds history. After explaining the linkage between climate and human activities, global warming is discussed as a non-stop phenomenon that keeps influencing us. After showing evidence of global warming, it is, how constantly, stated that the rapid increases of the amount of greenhouse gases is mainly caused by human activity and social progression. For instance, in the 1700s, the indus foot race revolution started up the human economic production fuelled by coal after that, the development of car (an industrial production) speeded up the utilization of oil especially in developed countries. Volcanoes, oceans and rivers activities and influences are explored to end the chapter. (Chapter 1, P.25) This chapter provides history of the Earth and human, which explains the rational behind climates and human activities and further remonstrate us the possibility of influences to us in the future. After the comprehensive explanation of the relationship of solar radiation tothe atmospheric elements, formation of the Earth surface and eventually links to human development, chapter devil proceeds to rendering of the solid tectonic parts and its tectonic processes, then explores its influence and relationship to human kind. Tectonics is the distorted shape of the earths surface. In the beginning chapter two provides basic information of the structure and composition of the Earth and the principle of Isostasy. (Chapter 2, P.53) From the center of the Earth, it consisted of a cor e, a mantle and a bile. With the heat constantly generates from the interior of the Earth, the crust is at the same time in motion. These affects the crust which is the surface of the Earth where human habitat and creates a series of tectonic processes that we human being considered as catastrophes. Isostasy is then referred to the concept that all elevation son the Earth are determined and controlled by the thickness and density of the underlying crust and known as Equal standing.Following is the discussion of the Plate tectonics, which foremost explains the heat generates from the Earth by radioactive decay and this source is strong enough to prevent shrinking and to drive tectonic processes. The chapter further remarks on the structures and processes of the movement of rocks using the concepts of continental drift, hot spot, and plates. (Chapter 2, P.61) After all the fundamental information then comes to the influences of tectonic processes include Volcanism, Earthquakes, Tsun amis, Living in rifts and Living on small islands. The above five processes are discussed from its formation reasons to its impacts on humans habitat and explains with examples of the according changes in mankind behaviors and history. Firstly, in volcanoes eruption, molten rocks known as magma is introduced and categorized into intrusive rock and extrusive rocks. (Chapter 2, P.67) Three historically important eruptions are described. The violent outburst of Santorini in 1640 B.C. which has a great possibility of leading to the remarkable replacement of Minoan civilization by the Mycenaeans. The other two are explosion of glowing cloud, one is from the Mount Vesuvius and the other is the Mount Pelee. In the later eruption, a glowing cloud around 500 meters high crashed in St.Pierre which burned and covered the whole town and killed approximately 25,000 people. Secondly, earthquakes occur when faults slip in a sudden. The highest magnitude of earthquake that is ever measured is 9.5 i n Chile on 22th of May in 1960. Possible influences of earthquakes arediscussed by examples at Mayan Quirigua, Israeli site of Armagedon and San Francisco. Earthquakes can be as severe as to destruct all of the alert civilization in Maya empire. However, human can also learn from time to time to protect ourselves by obtaining knowledge of building in earthquake-prone areas. (Chapter 2, P.73) Thirdly, tsunami is a gigantic system of waves in ocean basins that is resulted from sudden geological fault of ocean surfaces.Mostly, tsunami is a consequence of underwater earthquakes and the examples of Indian Ocean and La Palma are then illustrated. In the significant tsunami of Indian Ocean, more than 200,000 deaths were caused directly and long-term social facilities and industries destructions, for instances, buildings, roads and tourism industry, were created. Fourthly, people living in rifts because those low valleys contain a great amount of resources in terms of water, food and ric h soils for living. Examples of East African rift system and Hawaii are mentioned to further illustrate the abundant resources in rift valleys. (Chapter 2, P.83) Last, the chapter ends with describing people living on thousands of small islands like Hawaii and Midway which are to the highest degree isolated from the rest of the world geographically but play significant role of intermediate lettuce of air route. With the basis of the atmospheric element and tectonic planet surface mentioned in the first two chapters, chapter three gallops with the introduction of the origin of human and continents. The controversy of emergence of human kind from creationism or evolution is evaluated and the origin of existing continents is discussed with evidence. Generally, creationism represents the belief that creatures are created by Genesis 1 in the 6-day period when paragon made the Earth. Creationists think the concept of evolution can be compatible with creations in the biblical stories. all living thing in the world are made by God separately and both word in the Bible is undoubtedly true. (Chapter 3, P.90) While theory of evolution tells the existing creatures are evolved from antediluvian living things in the process of natural selection. Evolutionist rejects supreme beings and thinks that living objects in the universe all undergoes physical processes of changing. French anatomist George Cuvier proposed the idea that the Earth had undergone several times of huge extinction and recreation of new organisms end-to-end times. If the existing organisms are capable of adapting to theirenvironment, it survives if it does not, it simply varies or perishes. With the continuous variation of creatures to adapt to the environment and prevent from dying produces the form of existing creatures nowadays. The controversy of creationism and evolution continued seriously through the 20th century. The trial of John Scopes in Dayton in 1925 is mentioned to show the deep-rooted co nflicts. (Chapter 3, P.94) The sequence of events that influenced the Earth is also discussed with the method of law of superposition to distinguish the age of substances.Such method can to certain extent prove the history of supercontinents. Continents preserve long history of the Earth and the discussion of continents is separated into two parts of continents formation and history of supercontinents. Two of the supercontinents are Gondwana and Pangea. Finding interchangeable fossil in different countries or areas proved they power once be a whole complete landmass. (Chapter 3, P.111) Concerning Gondwana as an example, similar fossils are found in Australia, India, South Africa and South America. besides, glaciation evidence is found in the above areas to show its unity in the past. close all the discussion of the formation and development of the Earth and human kind, the last chapter reveals the relationship between the Earth resources, human needs, behaviors and the environment influences and sustainability. Sustainability means humans patterns of living and working which are able to continue for the foreseeable future of humankind and, not causing series destruction or damage to every member or component in the ecosystem. (Chapter 4, P.120) This chapter breaks up the energy resources consumption and environmental consequences into five aspects of introduction to energy resources, mineral and rock resources, food resources, fresh water resources and wireless communication and the Internet. In the kinsperson of energy resources, information about world energy information is first given. It is shown that energy consumption of joined States is increasing from year to year. Also, the United State that possesses 5 percent of worlds population, consumes 25 percent of world energy production. While poor countries only consume low rate of energy. An unbalance energy use is to a large extent shown. (Chapter 4, P.123) Then energy resources formation, production and consumption and history of use of different resources are described regarding fossil fuel, nuclear energy, renewable resources and rock and mineral resources. To the aspect of food resources, nutritional requirements are discussed with a comparison and contrast of the calories consumption of industrialized countries and poor countries. Origin and characteristics of different sources of food for example Beans, wheat and fruit are mentioned afterwards. (Chapter 4, P.150) Thomas Robert Malthus produced an essay in 1798 introducing the tendency of population increasing exponentially which presented the scenario that world population kept escalating.Yet, while population increases the world is still not capable of feeding everybody although there are plenty of food. Food distribution is not even. This situation supports the doctrine of survival of the fittest, similar to the idea of natural selection in extinction and evolution. (Chapter 4, P.154) A development of silk road and distant mod communication internet and methods are then mentioned. From the further transportation of horse riding to steam engines, from land transport to ocean transport, there was a great advance in human society connection. Also with the invention and breakthrough of communication gadgets time to time, from electricity generators to telephone and to radio, information can be sprinkle much easier. (Chapter 4, P.157) It is, however, worth to meditate that how those technology can be correctly used to benefit human beings. To sum up, by providing scientific information and evidence of the formation and changes of the Earth and human kind, this book tells the story between the Earth and people. While human civilization proceeds and enters the era of rapid economic activities, energy consumption keeps escalating for the productivity and need of human. It is, yet, remarkable that all of the energy sources create certain amount of problems to the Earth and environment. As a closed ecosystem, a ddressing sustainability is of utmost significant to human beings future life. At the end gives hearing the message of its correlationship in order to highlight the importance of obtaining sustainability to human and our habitat, the Earth.Reference listRogers, J. Human memory Essay
The probe into whether images aid keeping crawfish expose has been fairly successful. The experimental hypothesis participants in civilize 1(words with images) would perform break up than those in condition 2 (words without images), has been rejected therefore the null hypothesis there will be no difference in condition 1 (involving grid of random words supported by images) and condition 2 (only consisting of random words) has been accepted.Only to some extent from the patronage graph ( embodiment 1 vs. Condition 2), chiffonier we say condition 1 (words with images) recalled more(prenominal) words than those in condition 2 (words without images) because the line for condition 1 is generally above the line for condition 2 and this fairly supports the experimental hypothesis. The results c areful using central tendency and rounds of dispersion moderately support the experimental hypothesis. The mean and median for condition 1 (14. 1 & 14. 5) was greater than of condition 2 (1 2. 6 & 13. 5) indicating that there is a best recall when words are companied by optic aid and this supports the experimental hypothesis. The range (11) illustrated that selective information for some(prenominal) conditions were evenly spread out, which does non necessary support the experimental hypothesis. Standard deviation, a more reliable measure of the dispersion than range has shown data in condition 2 (3. 977715704) is slightly more spread out than in condition 1 (3. 604010112).Descriptive statistics (numerical & graphical) have illustrated that condition 1 (words with images) performed better and this supports the experimental hypothesis. non only do the numerical statistics support the hypothesis but the results are fairly pronounced, simply by looking at the line graph (graphical statistics) there is definitely a difference betwixt both conditions although the Mann-Whitney U-test shows this to be below the level of significance.Inferential statistics, which enable us to draw clear conclusions about the likelihood of the hypothesis being true, is render for accepting the null hypothesis. The implication of the results measured using a non-parametric method, The Mann-Whitney U-test distinctly shows that at the significance level of 0. 05, the results were very likely to have happened by chance. Though the observed value, 35 is greater than the critical value of 23 but only by 10. Comparatively, the findings of this interpret support preliminary theory and enquiry but also are contrary to them.Bower, 1972 imagery recall experiment be that participants, who used imagery, recalled 80% of the words compared to only 45% by the non-imagers. In this investigation, participants in condition 1 (words with images) recalled 70. 5% of the words compared to 63% by the non-imagers. My investigation does support Bowers findings, since there is a difference however the differences between the two conditions is not significant. Previous research does sugge st that data in STM is stored in an acoustic manner this was demonstrated by Conrad (1964).Illustrating people may not constantly use visual codes to remember data and this supports the null hypothesis in addition Baddeleys (1966) study suggests that data is also stored semantically and this again illustrates that people may not always use visual codes. A possible problem with this experiment is the experimental design which lacks ecological validity and also does not account for individual differences. The study used independent groups, which meant it lacked control of participant variable and needed more participants.A matched participant design could have been used instead to deal with participant variables as participants are matched on key variables such as age and memory ability. Another problem of the study was the ingest size. The study only used 20 participants, a small sample therefore findings cannot be generalized to the rest of the population. So, a larger sample si ze of 50+ would be more representative and can be generalised. In addition, the investigation used opportunity sampling, which is very biased, and again it cannot be generalised.Random sampling would be the best method to select participants since it is potentially unbiased. An additional problem was the images used some of the images were study images (i. e. bible & pizza) and others were actual photographs (real life images, i. e. greenhouse). This may have been a problem since real life images may possibly be easier to remember than cartoon images or vice versa. To resolve such problem, would be by using only cartoon images alone or only real life images. The recall between genders may have wider implications on the whole men have performed better than women, when studies have shown women should perform better than men. For example women perform better than men in tasks such as verbal learning computer memory tasks, name face association, and first last name associations learnin g (Larrabee and Crook, 1993). Ideas for a follow up research study is the effects of gender recall and discover if there is a significant effect for the depend on of a participant on the types of gender associated images recalled and to compare the effects of visual and semantic codes in depth. on that point is evidence to illustrate that people do remember more with the aid of visual representation and evidence to illustrate people remember more without any visual representation. This itself suggests people do remember data and information differently (individual differences), i. e. acoustically, semantically. Therefore it is important to recognize these findings as they have strong insinuations for its involvement in everyday life, for example with teaching, revision and marketing.References & BibliographyAtkinson, R. Comparative study between commencement addresses
By analyzing texture of wrangle communication and choice of content, we will observe that though the speakers are early Identical In age, choice of go and professional status thither Is disparity In the personae projected and ultimately the meat delivered by them. The message in Jobs speech (Stanford university News, 2005) was to encourage the students to not be afraid to do what they love, and he arrived at this come in by lugubriously narrating three stories of adversity from his life.Gates speech (Harvard gazette, 2007) In contrast was aimed to jazz up the students to strive to dress Inequity In the world, which he achieved by humorously recounting his exploits at Harvard and his thoughts on inequity. We notice here that despite similar situational influences, the two men try to present antithetic images of themselves by the tone of their speech and also by carefully filtering which aspects of their life they disclose (Leary, M. R. , & Allen, A. B. , 2011, p. 1199).The b eginning(a) major difference is the tone of the speech Jobs opts for a precise solemn approach with few humorous departures while Gates Is very all-encompassing in his use of humor which In fact forms a very Integral part of the first half of his speech. The second difference Is the kind of content In the speeches Gates shares his thoughts on inequity, the journey of his reaching at this epiphany and his thoughts on how the problem could be tackled while Jobs divulges very personal stories active his adoption, getting pink-slipped from Apple and being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.Due to the fact that Jobs speech contains more than elements personal to himself, we ensure a very clear congruence of animator, author and principle and as a result his speech seems more original as compared to Gates speech (Montgomery, 2001 , p. 00). We discern this from the sense of passion and honesty which permeates throughout Jobs address, and the fact that he divulges stories of close to of the lowest points in his life. This is a clear attempt to break free of the impression of himself as an ultra-successful man of affairs in the audience eyes, and instead replace that image with a more human one so that the audience can fully appreciate the struggles of his life and the truth about his success. As such we see that Gates seems more open to audience Interaction while Jobs seems to be In a ore thoughtful and distant pique which is apparent in both his vocalic and gestures. We can observe this distant mood of Jobs speech most clearly in his gestures, more specifically in his gaze and pause, because sentences are rarely uttered in a behavioral vacuum (Tim Wharton, 2009, p. 1). During Gates speech we see that he is very reactive to audience reaction, in that he always and looks up at the audience to accommodate for their applause.By contrast Jobs does not take this approach, he feature of the speech ties into the previous two we view discussed, and contributes o the personae that they are nerve-racking to project Jobs being that of a solemn successful tech-enthusiast while Gates is that of a humorous successful philanthropist. These personae that they have constructed over the course of the speech are not superficial to the speech, but in fact sport an important role in fulfilling the respective purposes of their speeches. The main aim of any commencement address is to inspire the audience in some way, be it to bring about a change in their lives or a change in the oral. Both Jobs and Gates have achieved the objective of inspiring the audience, but we have seen that they went about it very differently. Since Gates message is one of global proportions, he uses his fame and background as a philanthropist to take up his message and this is why the content of his message is structured around humor, but in contrast Jobs message is personal to each individual and so we see that in his speech he tries to be more personal himself to elicit the kind of response he wants.

Politics in Studentsââ¬â¢ Life Essay
The call into question of the grammatical constituenticipation of students in administration has always evoked a lot of discussion. It has been a very arguable subject. Two contrasting opinion is have been expressed by the two groups of people. Both the groups are as convinced of the merits of their cases. The discussion goes on between the students, teachers, politicians and other well-wishers of the student community. In spite of their take up efforts, no satisfactory or convincing solution has so far been found cut. Those who oppose the participation of students in politics put up a strong case. They argue the t politics is a begrimed game. It creates groups and parties and leads to permanent enmities. It disturbs the peace of mind of the students. The primary duty of a student is to pay single-minded, attention to his studies He is supposed to lead a life of penance or Tapasya. He cannot afford to take part in the luxury of politics. Politics causes a great interference in the studies of the students. Interest in politics leads a student to an combat-ready participation in strikes, demonstrations and processions. At times, it brings him into a serious clash with the college authorities or the police. May be, he lands himself in jail. All this disrupts his studies and he is pushed off the rails. He loses his real purport in life and goes astray. Participation in politics thus spoils a students life history and makes him useless for any purpose other than strikes, demonstrations and slogan-sh forthing. Those who support the participation of students in politics make out an equally strong case. They argue that education does not mean mere literacy. It means a primitive and all-round development of a students personality. It makes him aware of what is happening in his country and in the world around him. It also develops in him the qualities of leadership. Instead of being a timid, shy book- worm, he grows into an aggressive, grand and alert Youngma n who knows how to fight the battle of life. Participation in politics trains a student to be a good citizen. It gives him training in the democratic way of life. He grows into a responsible and cultured citizen who is an summation to the nation it creates in him a sense of patriotism. He knows his duties towards his country. He has a fair knowledge of the world. He develops debating skill and he can always put forward his point of view with force and conviction. He develops all the qualities of head and heart. He is trained for leadership. As a leader in the making, he develops much(prenominal)(prenominal) qualities as courage, sincerity of purpose, a spirit of service, sympathy for the fellowmen, self-discipline and devotion to duty. Student period is the formative period in ones life. A student must develop all such qualities in him during this period as enable him to lead a successful life. If we study the lives of our of them did take an busy part in politics even during the ir student days. Now, it is difficult to pronounce any verdict in favor of one or the other point of view. The golden mean would probably be the best way out. A student should take part in politics, but is should not be an active participation. All activities are good if one remains within reasonable limits. Students should, therefore, pay attention to their studies. They should at the same time, keep themselves informed about, that is happening around them. They should not hesitate from jumping into politics if the land site threatens the unity or the freedom of the country. So this was an essay on student politics.

Change Management in Delta Airlines Research Paper
Change Management in Delta air hoses - Research Paper ExampleThe succeeding(a) portion of the project would be dealing with the diagnosis of the calling conditions of Delta Airlines. This part would be discussing the mission and raft statement of the company followed by its objectives and business strategies. The third part of the project would reflect change precaution within the organization by an implementation of Kotters eight-step approach. The Eight Step Model of Kotter is one of the well-nigh popular models for scheduling, implementing and finally sustaining a change process. Company Overview As already discussed above, Delta Airlines is a popular American Airline whose headquarter is located in Atlanta, United States (Federal Aviation Administration, 2013). This airline generally operates both international and national networks having its service routes in all the continents excepting Antarctica. The company along with its subsidiaries operates more than 5000 flights regularly. The company employs 80000 employees approximately (Delta Airlines, n.d.). The hub is located at Hartsfield Jackson Atlanta International Airport, which is one of the busiest airports in the human being, in terms of passenger traffic as well as the total number of takeoffs and landings. It is the sixth oldest international airline because of its foundation date. Moreover, it is one of the oldest airways in United States as well. The company is one among the 4 founding members of Sky Team Airline Alliance, the former(a) 3 being Air France, Aeromexico and Korean Air. The company has been declared as the largest airline in the world in 2011and 2012 in terms of the total fleet size and the scheduled passenger traffic (Rediff, 2013). It has besides been rewarded for becoming the second largest airline in respect of the total revenue-passenger kilometers carried in the year 2012. The Delta Connection provides regional service to the company. Diagnosis The foundation of the com pany is based on the reliable and safe air transportation, providing identify customer service to the travelers or passengers. Delta Airlines leads in the airline labor for providing the best airline transportation. The company entered into the industry in the year 2013 by further strengthening its business strategies. It is continuing to improve the performance by executing strategic initiatives. While many of the competitors of the company were focusing on the restructuring efforts or the significant integration, Delta Airline undertook the strategy of advancing its market position across the globe. The innovative business strategies of Delta Airlines (including the re-branding technique) have helped the company in strengthening its position in the world. The acquisition of Northwest Airlines proved to be one of the successful business strategies for the company. This strategy helped the company in reshaping the business goals. In past few years, the company has taken unlike st eps in improving its balance sheet, expanding its operations by getting into global partnership, investment in airlines, such as Virgin Atlantic and finally purchasing oil refinery. It increased its flexibility in these two years in order to reduce its flaws and strengthen the market reputation. However, the launch of the companys song as a low cost airline followed by its codeshare agreement with the Northwest Airlines and the Continental Airlines initiated the declining phase of Delta Airways.
